Harrow School Tour

Harrow School Tour

Harrow was founded in 1572 under a royal charter from Queen Elizabeth I by local landowning farmer, John Lyon. It soon became one of the greatest schools in the country, attracting pupils from all over the world. On this tour we will visit several rooms including the Chapel and the Museum of Harrow Life. The tour concludes with tea in the West Street room.

There is now only one date for this tour, which is Wednesday, 20th September.

The School has an enrolment of 814 boys, all of whom board full-time. Our tour will take place in term time so that we can see the boys in their uniform including their blue and white scarves and smart attire.

Harrow School was attended by no less than eight former Prime Ministers, two Kings and numerous statesmen. The School covers 400 acres of land on and around the Hill and is famous for its sporting achievements and charitable fundraising, often involving the local community, as well as boasting its strong academic and music history.

Harrow Hill itself is a lively and interesting place so it may be worth spending time exploring prior to the tour. For those who prefer shopping, Harrow has a busy shopping centre. There are also places to eat should members wish to arrive early and take lunch but remember afternoon tea will be served at 3:30 pm.

Our tour of the School will commence at 2.00 pm and last approximately 1.5 hours. We will visit several rooms, the Chapel and the Museum of Harrow Life. As our visits will take place during term time advance notice of the rooms we will actually see on each day cannot be provided.

A further option may be available:  The ancient Church of St Mary’s opposite the School, built in 1093, is the highest and oldest building in Harrow. The church offers a warm welcome to visitors and is open daily. It is likely that we can also arrange a tour of the ancient Church including the graveyard.  John Lyon and his wife are both buried in the Church and Lord Byron, a former pupil at the School, was a frequent visitor. On the grounds, visitors can see Byron’s favourite “Peachy Tomb” as recorded in “Lines Written Beneath an Elm in the Churchyard at Harrow”.  This tour would take around 1.5 hours so if it is of interest and we are able to arrange it, you should plan to be there for around lunchtime.  Details will be provided to those who book for the Harrow School visit in due course.

Mobility Considerations

Note that Harrow-on-the-Hill is so named for a reason! The hill is steep. The School buildings are old and many have uneven floors. There will also be a number of steps to negotiate during the tour.

The walk from either Harrow-on-the-Hill station or the School’s car park takes 10-15 minutes with one way being uphill.
