We associate Shakespeare with Stratford Upon Avon where he was born, and London’s Bankside, where he worked, but Shakespeare spent a lot of time in the City of London.
Documents relating to court cases, deeds, disputes and plays help us to put together an intriguing trail. This starts with a contemporary theatre where the Bard’s works are performed and taking in a Shakespeare memorial, a delightful Elizabethan knot garden, the atmospheric courtyard where Shakespeare collected velvet cloth for a royal procession, Ireland Yard where he owned a house and Playhouse Yard, the site where his last plays were performed by candlelight.
We will be guided by Diane Burstein, a London Walks’ Blue Badge guide who has led many walks for our Club, and, if numbers require it, one of her colleagues. Diane is the author of a successful book “London Then and Now” which featured in BBC History magazine’s Top Ten Best Seller.
