Stephen Sondheim’s passing at the age of 91 at the end of 2021 led to widespread mourning on both sides of the Atlantic. It also prompted Cameron Mackintosh to put together a lavish London tribute concert last May called Old Friends, featuring numerous highlights from his peerless canon by stars who’d worked with the musical theatre colossus over the decades.
Matthew Bourne’s production was too good to leave as a one off. So here it is in retooled form, with fewer massive name guests, but a rock-solid core line up headed by Broadway legend Bernadette Peters. Regarded by many as the foremost stage interpreter of Sondheim, she’s never done a full-length West End run before. But now she returns as the star attraction after guesting last year. She’ll be joined by fellow Braodway star Lea Salonga, plus an imprressive British company including Christine Allado, Janie Dee, Bonnie Langford and Jeremy Secomb, Beatrice Penny-Touré, Joanna Riding and Jac Yarrow.
Given the jocular subtitle ‘A Great Big Broadway Show’, it promises to be less a sombre send-off for Sondheim than a rousing celebration of his astonishing body of work.
