Syon was built on the site of a former abbey and has incredible historical connections from the medieval and Tudor past to today. Built in 1550, Syon House is the home of the Duke of Northumberland. The freehold of the house was gifted by James I to Henry Percy, the 9th Earl of Northumberland, and it has remained in the family ever since. In 1547 King Henry VIII’s coffin was brought to Syon on its way to Windsor for burial. In 1760, Robert Adam updated the house and created some of the most impressive interiors. Within the 200 acres of parkland there are 40 acres of gardens designed by Lancelot ‘Capability’ Brown.
The crowning glory of Syon Park’s gardens is the Great Conservatory. The first of its kind to be built out of gunmetal, Bath stone and glass. Originally designed to act as a show house it inspired Joseph Paxton in his design for Crystal Palace. Both house and garden have featured in many TV and film productions including the popular ‘Downton’.
We will be in two groups depending on numbers. Our guided tour of the house will begin at either 11am or 11.15am from the Syon House visitor centre opposite the car park.
